Braunschweig City Archive: Current Access and Availability

The Braunschweig City Archive, located at Schlossplatz 1 North Wing, Entrance "Schloss-Museum" in Braunschweig (38100), is a publicly accessible resource for historical documents and newspapers. The archive can be reached by following signs towards the city center or castle, with parking available (fee required) in the Schloss-Arkaden parking garage.

For those planning a visit, it is recommended to inquire about any current restrictions beforehand by email or phone. As of now, there is no explicit publicly available information detailing specific restrictions on the use of newspapers in the Stadtarchiv Braunschweig. However, some microfilm newspapers are currently only available to a limited extent due to preventive checks and measures regarding the so-called acid syndrome. Individual films' availability may change on a weekly or long-term basis.

The Volksfreund (H II: Z 2) and the Deutsche Reichszeitung (H II: Z 15) are not available for use until at least the end of the year. Some newspapers in the archive, however, have been digitized and are available on PCs in the reading room. A list of the digitized newspapers can be found online.

The reading room of the Braunschweig City Archive is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1 pm, and Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm. To make an appointment, users can email at [email protected] or call 0531 470-4719.

The archive is easily accessible by public transport, with Tram 1 and 5, or bus line 420, providing direct routes from the main station. For more information, visitors can contact the Information/Reading Room via Tel.: 0531 4704719, the Secretariat/Administration via Tel.: 0531 4704711, or by fax at 0531 4704725, or by email at [email protected].

On Monday and Friday, archival materials can be collected at 11 am. On Tuesday to Thursday, they can be collected at 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm. The provision of archival materials is recommended to be ordered in advance.

Barrier-free access to the archive is available via the left side entrance. For the latest updates and information, visitors are advised to check the archive's website or contact them directly.
