Clash at a bar favoring MAGA policies hints at potential threats to world economies
The White House has been shrouded in a cloud of intrigue, as an alleged shouting match between two members of President Donald Trump's finance team, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte, took place at an exclusive MAGA club last week.
The spur for the near-fisticuffs was Bessent's belief that Pulte had bad-mouthed him to the president. This incident offers two worrying insights into tensions inside Trump's brain trust, as the president's second administration has shown signs of vicious infighting, despite jettisoning anyone who saw themselves as an "adult in the room."
The incident comes at a time when the economy is a significant concern for many Americans. A CBS News poll published last week showed that just 36% of voters think the economy is good, while an NBC News survey reveals that Trump's approval is weakening on vital economic issues. Only 39% approve of his handling of inflation, and 41% back his handling of trade and tariffs.
Trump's tariff wars have ripped up a global trading system that made the US the world's mightiest economic power. The consumer goods sector is now suffering from rising prices brought on by tariffs, and workers are becoming more pessimistic about the economy and Trump's tariff strategy. Tariffs rank dead last as what workers think that the president should be prioritizing.
Bessent refused to agree that tariffs are an effective tax on consumers, and his capacity to do his job - calming the markets, shaping the president's wildest instincts, and stabilizing the global economy - requires Trump's absolute confidence.
Pulte's growing behind-the-scenes role is causing intrigue, and his agency has been unearthing alleged irregularities on mortgage forms filed by some of the president's top targets, including Lisa Cook. U.S. Senator Adam Schiff clashed last week within a high-level Trump organization with Federal Housing Finance Agency Chief Bill Pulte.
The jobs report suggested that Trump's outlandish economic approach is beginning to cause damage, adding only 22,000 positions last month. Employment rates among Black Americans and young people are worsening fast.
In response to the incident, the White House declined to comment. However, the alleged shouting match reveals there's only one currency in MAGA world: uber loyalty to Trump. As the economy continues to be a significant concern, the tensions within Trump's finance team may add to the uncertainty and instability that many Americans are already feeling.
