Clean up and earn £1000: collaboration between a popular brand and dancer Oti Mabuse launches cleanup competition
In March 2025, Ebay teamed up with Opinium to conduct a comprehensive study among 2,000 UK adults. The research revealed some interesting insights about spring cleaning and decluttering habits in the UK.
The study showed that while three quarters of people are planning a spring clean this year, a quarter of them feel they lack the time, and 21% don't know where to start. However, the main reasons for spring cleaning remain the same: creating more space, improving mental well-being, and making extra money.
Interestingly, more than half of the participants confessed to keeping items "just in case" they might need them someday. But Ebay's AI listing features and competitive pricing could help turn these unused items into cash. Participants could potentially earn up to £1K from selling their pre-loved items.
For instance, selling an old smartphone could fetch £160, an espresso machine £108, headphones £161, and unused instruments such as a guitar £200. Ebay's 'List to £1K' challenge is designed to help people discover how much they could earn by listing their items for sale.
The challenge is structured to break spring cleaning into three weekly steps, making it easy to stay motivated, list smart, and start earning fast. Participating in the challenge could help one earn up to £1,000 from selling unused items.
The kitchen (39%) and the bedroom (46%) were identified as the rooms with the most need for a spring clean, with clothes and accessories (68%), mobile phones (22%), and tech (21%) taking up the most space in UK homes.
To encourage Brits to participate, Ebay and prominent personality Oti Mabuse are offering a series of tips and tricks to spring clean and make money. Mabuse is participating in the 'List to £1K' challenge to clear out items her family no longer needs and make space for what matters most.
Tom Scott, another well-known personality, is also collaborating with Ebay for the challenge. He emphasises the importance of breaking a spring clean down into small, actionable tasks to make the process less daunting.
Despite good intentions, 80% of UK adults have unused or unwanted items in their homes. With the 'List to £1K' challenge, Ebay is providing a platform for Brits to declutter, earn money, and improve their living spaces.
