CNN Elevates David Chalian to Senior Vice President and Head of Washington Bureau
CNN Announces Promotion of David Chalian to Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief
CNN has announced a significant shake-up in its political team, with the promotion of David Chalian to the role of Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief. Chalian, who joined CNN in 2013, has been a key figure in the network's political coverage and will now oversee CNN's Washington bureau and political news coverage from the nation's capital.
Before joining CNN, Chalian had a distinguished career in journalism. He was the political director at ABC News and was a part of the team that won an Emmy Award for covering President Barack Obama's first inauguration in 2009. Chalian also served as Washington bureau chief for Yahoo! News and was vice president for video programming at Politico.
At Politico, Chalian oversaw all of Politico's video efforts, including "Politico Live" special-events coverage and new video programming. He was also a political editor and on-air political analyst for "PBS NewsHour". During his tenure at "PBS NewsHour", its political coverage won the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
In his expanded role at CNN, Chalian will continue to supervise CNN's daily political reporting across all platforms. He will also oversee polling and decision desk operations and editorial content for special political programming. Chalian has been responsible for setting the editorial direction of CNN's debates and town halls for nearly a decade, and one of the debates he set the direction for was the pivotal June debate between President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump.
Chalian will continue to appear across the network as part of its on-air political coverage. His promotion comes as CNN continues to invest in its political coverage, with a focus on providing in-depth analysis and breaking news to its audience. With Chalian at the helm, CNN's Washington bureau is well-positioned to deliver on that promise.
