CNN Introduces a New Streaming Platform Dubbed CNN+, Following Standard Naming Conventions for such Services

CNN, the renowned news network, is set to venture into the streaming world with the launch of its new service, CNN+, scheduled for Q1 2022. This marks the network's biggest expansion since its inception in 1980.

The streaming landscape today is crowded, and CNN+ may face a challenge in carving out a niche, especially without any standout original shows at launch. However, the network has plans to create new original films and shows for its service in the future.

One of the key features of CNN+ will be the provision of a "new, additive experience" beyond the usual news and politics content that CNN is known for. Subscribers will have access to 8 to 12 hours of daily live and interactive original programming, as well as additional on-demand content from popular shows like Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, United Shades of America, and This is Life with Lisa Ling.

In contrast to many other streaming services, CNN+ will not offer a free ad-supported tier initially. The exact cost of a subscription has not been set yet.

Interestingly, CNN+ will not have a separate app. Instead, subscribers will log into the existing CNN app to access CNN+ content.

There is a possibility that CNN+ could be included in a package with HBO Max and Discovery+ after the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger gets finalized next year. However, there are no official plans for a subscription bundle between CNN+, HBO Max, and other WarnerMedia services.

Unfortunately, CNN+ was officially discontinued in April 2022 shortly after its launch. Warner Bros. Discovery, instead, plans to launch a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, 2023, rather than reviving CNN+ itself.
