Coco 2 production officially underway at Pixar film studios

Pixar, the renowned animation studio, has announced that they are working on a sequel to their Academy Award-winning animated feature Coco. The Mexican American production, set to be released in 2029, will continue the enchanting world established by the original film and delve deeper into the rich traditions of Mexico's Day of the Dead.

Mark Nielsen, who produced the original Coco, will take on the same role for the sequel. Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, who co-directed the first film, will return to the director's chair for the sequel, promising a story filled with humor, heart, and adventure.

The original Coco introduced audiences to the vibrant and colourful world of the Dia de los Muertos traditions in Mexico, expanding the understanding of this beloved annual celebration of the dead. The sequel, titled Coco 2, is expected to feature another Day of the Dead adventure, promising to captivate audiences once more.

The story of Coco 2 may be influenced by the character Coco's passing, which marked the end of the first film. However, it is not expected to be a direct continuation of the first film's plot, offering a fresh and exciting narrative.

One of the most significant aspects of the original Coco was the emotional depth it conveyed, particularly through the song "Remember Me". It is anticipated that the sequel will maintain this emotional depth, providing audiences with a moving and memorable experience.

The sequel to Coco will star Gael Garcia Bernal and Anthony Gonzales, who voiced the characters Hector and Miguel in the original film. A boat ride attraction for Coco is also in the works at Disney California Adventure, although the release date for this attraction and the film have not yet been set.

Construction for the Coco boat ride attraction is scheduled to begin in 2026, while the sequel to Coco is expected to be released in theaters in 2029, according to Variety. The release date for the sequel has also been confirmed for Germany in 2029.

The song "Remember Me" may have a role in the sequel to Coco, continuing its significant emotional impact on the audience. With the production in its early stages, fans can look forward to more updates on this much-anticipated sequel in the coming years.
