College Football Week 1 showdown between Utah and UCLA at Rose Bowl, forecasts, betting odds, and preferred wagers analyzed
The Utah Utes and UCLA Bruins are set to clash in a highly anticipated Pac-12 matchup on Saturday, August 30, in Pasadena, CA. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX.
Utah, fresh off a top-10 defensive season, will look to continue their success as they face the Bruins. Last year, the Utes' defense finished fourth in Success Rate and ranked 15th at creating Havoc. Leading tackler Lander Barton returns to anchor the defense, providing a solid foundation for Utah.
On the offensive side, Utah's quarterback, Devon Dampier, is expected to lead the charge. Dampier had a breakout season last year, amassing 2,768 passing yards, 1,166 rushing yards, and 31 total touchdowns.
UCLA, on the other hand, will be counting on their newly acquired quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, to make an impact. Iamaleava, who transferred from Tennessee, averaged 200 yards passing per game with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. However, concerns about his performance under pressure linger, as he posted a 25% pressure-to-sack ratio, one of the highest marks in the country.
UCLA's offense could be hampered by injuries in the receiver room, with the status of several players uncertain. Moreover, the Bruins lost all four of their top receivers and the starting tight end from last year, which could put additional pressure on Iamaleava and the offense.
UCLA's defense, which ranked 39th in total defense last season, will need to show significant improvement, especially in preventing Finishing Drives, as they struggled in this area last season, ranking 123rd nationally in allowing opponents to cash in on scoring opportunities. The defense returns just one starter, defensive tackle Siale Taupaki, from a terrific run defense.
Meanwhile, Utah returns all five starters on their offensive line, providing stability and continuity for their offense. Running back Wayshawn Parker, who rushed for 735 yards at Washington State last season, could pose a threat to the Bruins' defense. UCLA's running back, Jalen Berger, averaged 3.7 yards per carry last season with the Bruins.
The over/under for the game is set at 51.5 points. UCLA's moneyline is +170, indicating they are underdogs in this matchup, while Utah is favored by 5.5 points on the spread.
This promises to be an exciting contest between two talented teams. Don't miss the action as the Utah Utes take on the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night.
