Top 25 College Football Rankings: South Florida Makes a Comeback, Georgia and Tennessee Clash

After a seven-year absence, South Florida has made a triumphant return to the AP Top 25 college football poll, landing at the No. 18 spot. The University of South Florida, the only team from The American in the Top 25, is aiming to achieve a significant feat by becoming the fifth team to start a season with three wins over ranked opponents, a feat last accomplished by Miami in 1987.

Meanwhile, Georgia, ranked No. 6, will face Tennessee, ranked No. 15, in a highly anticipated match-up. This will be the sixth straight time these two teams meet, with Georgia going for their ninth consecutive win in the series. The spotlight will be on Volunteers quarterback Joey Aguilar, who will be facing a formidable challenge.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Tennessee is not the only SEC team making waves. The conference boasts an impressive 11 teams in the Top 25, including No. 3 Alabama, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 LSU, and No. 11 Kentucky. The Big Ten is not far behind, with six teams in the Top 25, including No. 1 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan, and No. 9 Penn State, which received five first-place votes.

Notre Dame, ranked No. 8, will face No. 16 Texas A&M in a crucial match-up. Notre Dame is looking to avoid a second 0-2 start in four years, while Texas A&M is aiming to build on their current ranking. Jeremiyah Love scored the late tie-breaking touchdown for Notre Dame in last year's season-opening meeting in College Station.

In the ACC, Miami is ranked No. 5, Florida State has its highest ranking since it was No. 10 in the 2024 preseason poll, and Clemson slipped from No. 8 to No. 12. Oregon is ranked No. 4, Auburn is ranked No. 24, and Oklahoma is ranked No. 13.

Interestingly, Alabama and Auburn had not appeared in the Top 25 at the same time since November 2021 until Sunday. The Independent also has a representative in the Top 25, with Notre Dame holding the No. 8 spot. Missouri is ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 college football poll.

Alex Golesh, the third coach since 2018 to lead the University of South Florida back into the AP Top-25 college football rankings, will be hoping to guide his team to even greater heights. The college football season is off to an exciting start, and these rankings are a testament to the competitive spirit that pervades the sport.
