College team, Kent State, emerges victorious over Merrimack, putting an end to their prolonged losing streak, which was the longest in the nation.
In a historic turn of events, Kent State University's football team secured a long-awaited victory on Saturday, ending a 21-game losing streak. The Golden Flashes triumphed over FCS Merrimack College, marking their first win since defeating Central Connecticut State on September 16, 2023.
Under the guidance of interim head coach Mark Carney, Kent State showcased a determined performance throughout the game. The turning point came in the form of a 79-yard touchdown reception by Cade Wolford, who had multiple touchdown receptions on the day. Dru DeShields threw the touchdown pass, giving Kent State a 21-17 lead.
Wolford's impressive performance did not go unnoticed, as he finished the game with 109 receiving yards. CJ Montes also contributed to Kent State's offensive efforts by throwing a touchdown pass.
Merrimack, however, did not go down without a fight. Ayden Pereira threw a touchdown pass for the visitors, and Carlton Thai kicked three field goals during the game, including a 45-yard effort before Da'Realyst Clark's 100-yard touchdown on a kickoff return with 5:28 remaining in the game.
The excitement did not end there, as Thai also kicked a field goal to bring Merrimack within four points of Kent State with just over a minute left on the clock. However, the Golden Flashes held on to secure the victory and celebrate a much-needed triumph.
This home victory over FCS Merrimack not only marks the end of Kent State's 21-game losing streak but also highlights the potential for a brighter future under Coach Carney's leadership. The team will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season.
