Cologne is actively denying an opportunity to Freiburg
In a thrilling encounter at a sold-out Cologne stadium, FC Köln secured their second win of the new Bundesliga season, defeating SC Freiburg 4-1.
The game started with FC Köln adopting a defensive strategy, lining up with a back four. The tactic paid off as they managed to keep Freiburg at bay for much of the first half.
The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when Jakub Kaminski, making his first goal for FC Köln, found the back of the net. Marius Bülter was involved in the build-up, setting up the Polish striker for a well-taken goal.
Freiburg responded positively and created several chances, with Lucas Höler coming closest. However, Marvin Schwäbe in the FC Köln goal was equal to the task, making a brilliant save to deny Höler.
In the second half, FC Köln stepped up their game and doubled their lead through Kaminski once again. The striker capitalised on a mistake at the back, racing clear and calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper Atubolu.
Marius Bülter then turned provider, setting up Jan Thielmann for the third goal. The game saw a surge in FC Köln's confidence, and the stands erupted with the chant "Der FC ist wieder da" (The FC is back).
Freiburg managed to pull one back through Maximilian Eggestein, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed when substitute Said El Mala added a fourth for FC Köln.
The win marks FC Köln's first Bundesliga home victory in 477 days, moving them up to third place in the table. The club's new signings, including Ragnar Ache, Isak Johannesson, Jakub Kaminski, Tom Krauß, Ron-Robert Zieler, and Sebastian Sebulonsen, all made their Bundesliga debuts before the match against Freiburg.
Meanwhile, SC Freiburg remains winless in the Bundesliga, struggling to find their form from last season. They will be hoping to turn their fortunes around in their next fixture.
