Maurizio Pollini, the Legendary Pianist, Passes Away at 82
Maurizio Pollini, one of the most renowned interpreters of the music of Beethoven and Chopin, has passed away at the age of 82.
Born in Milan, Italy in 1942, Pollini started playing piano as a boy and went on to win prestigious competitions across Europe. His career spanned over six decades, during which he championed the works of 20th-century composers like Pierre Boulez and Stockhausen, as well as egalitarian concerts for students and workers at Milan's La Scala with conductor Claudio Abbado.
Over the past 40 years, Pollini extensively recorded the works of Beethoven and Chopin, many of which are considered definitive. His performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, op. 111 is noted for its emotional impact, and after the performance, his fingers hovered for a second, suggesting anticipation for the music to continue.
In 2012, Pollini was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, which was introduced by Gramophone magazine. The following year, he received the Best Instrumental Soloist Grammy Award for his recording of Chopin Nocturnes.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Pollini collaborated artistically with composer Luigi Nono. In his final years, he returned to the piano sonatas of Beethoven, and a 2019 Munich performance of Beethoven's final sonata by Pollini is considered to capture his artistry perfectly.
This Sunday morning, Tim Lihoreau will pay tribute to Maurizio Pollini on the website Breakfast at the Weekend, airing from 6.30am. The audience applauded Pollini with rapturous applause, which he received with his customary humble grace.
Gino Pollini, Maurizio's father, was a celebrated architect of Italy's modernist movement. Pollini's legacy as a legendary pianist will undoubtedly live on through his recordings and performances.
