Commemoration on September 14th: Lüner Monuments Unveil for Public Access

On the 14th of September 2025, Lünen will be opening its doors to the past as part of the nationwide "Day of Open Heritage". This event, coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, aims to raise awareness of the value of historic buildings.

One of the participating landmarks is the Alte Schule Alstedde, an 1865 ensemble that includes a school building, teacher's residence, stable, and a rare example of a "one-room school" - the school garden. Visitors can learn about the history of this site, which is now part of the Erlebnisreich Campus.

The institution opening the historic building section between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. is the Scholl School (Scholl-Gymnasium), originally a girls' school named after the Scholl siblings. The reconstructed school garden at Alte Schule Alstedde is maintained by the Arbeitskreis für Umwelt und Heimat e. V.

For those interested in exploring further, the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule on Holtgrevenstraße will open its protected building section on the same day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This modernist school, built between 1956 and 1962 according to plans by architect Hans Scharoun, is considered an example of humane post-war architecture.

Villa Urbahn on Graf-Adolf-Straße is another participating landmark. Designed by Anton Huber in 1925, this villa has been under monument protection since 2017 and now houses the Lünen City Museum. Villa Urbahn will be open for visitors from 10 am to 6 pm on both the 13th and 14th of September.

The former canteen building of the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia on Huettenallee, an industrial building from around 1870, will also be open. This building is part of Lünen's oldest industrial plant, the 1826-established Eisenhuette Westfalia, which has been carefully restored in recent years and now offers conference and event spaces.

Refreshments will be available on site at the former canteen building of Alte Schule Alstedde. Additional entertainment includes coffee and cake, as well as musical performances in the style of the 1860s. Note: The buildings are not barrier-free.

Guided tours will be offered at Alte Schule Alstedde on Heritage Day. Along with current exhibitions, guided tours of the old building and a children's painting workshop will take place at Villa Urbahn.
