Commemorative event marked with a twist: Queens-exclusive celebration in Meiningen

In the heart of Germany, the city of Meiningen recently paid tribute to a significant historical event that took place 180 years ago. On August 27, 1845, Queen Victoria of England visited Meiningen, a city that holds special significance as it was the birthplace of Queen Adelaide.

This year, the city marketing, led by Dirk Bradschetl, organised a small but meaningful action to remember this historic occasion. Bernhardstraße, a bustling street, was tastefully decorated for the commemoration.

During the event, author Elisa Jakob, inspired by Meiningen stories about Queen Adelaide and Victoria, shared insights into her upcoming historical novel "Queen Victoria" at Meiningen's tourist information.

The melodious tones of the music school added a touch of elegance to the commemoration, while children lining the streets warmly greeted passersby. A 100-gun salute, traditionally part of such receptions, was omitted this time due to current circumstances.

The discovery of the records about Queen Victoria's 1845 visit to Meiningen, made in the Meiningen State Archives in 2024, was a fundamental finding. However, the identity of the individual who made this discovery remains unknown. Dr. Christian Storch from Bad Liebenstein is believed to have made the discovery during his research in the Meiningen state archive that year.

Dr. Storch later published his findings in the Südthüringer Presse on October 12, 2024, revealing that Queen Victoria visited her "dear Family at M" in August 1845 and found the meeting "extremely well."

The commemoration also marked the first steps towards celebrating the 200th anniversary of Queen Adelaide's coronation in 1830, which will be celebrated in 2030. Duke Bernhard II's monument pedestal even received his own crown during the commemoration, symbolising the strong connection between the city and its royal past.

Meiningen's town church bells rang at 13:30, marking a special moment in the city's history. Queen Adelaide, who was previously Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, made the throne free for her niece Victoria in 1837, setting the stage for this historic visit.

As we remember this momentous occasion, we look forward to the future celebrations in 2030, marking the 200th anniversary of Queen Adelaide's ascension to the throne.
