Commencement of the series of happenings, titled "Eight Decades of Tranquility"

In the city of Landshut, a significant event series titled "80 Years of Peace" is taking place from January to May. This series, under the patronage of State Minister Joachim Herrmann, is a collaboration between the municipal Department of Culture and numerous partners, focusing on historical events of 1945 and their relevance to contemporary society.

The series kicks off with an intervention at the KOENIGmuseum, titled "Herzog & Koenig." The event, scheduled for January 26 at 11 am, is the brainchild of Johannes Herzog. It features a candelabrum from Yad Vashem and the model of the Holocaust Memorial by Fritz Koenig.

Roman Herzog, the former Federal President, grew up in Landshut. His father was the director of the museums and archives of the city, and his mother was a bank clerk. As Federal President, Roman Herzog made it his concern to keep the memory of brutality and inhumanity, persecution and oppression, and mass murder alive. He experienced the Nazi injustice as a child, and his commitment to commemorating the victims is evident in his actions.

In 1994, during his term, Roman Herzog announced the artistic competition for a "Monument for the Murdered Jews of Europe" in Berlin. Fritz Koenig participated with a monumental design in this competition. The candelabrum, a miniature of the large sculpture designed by David Palombo, which stands in front of the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem, is a testament to this competition.

The candelabrum was presented to Herzog by the director of the Holocaust memorial site Yad Vashem in Jerusalem in recognition of his commitment to commemorating the victims. A silver candelabrum, brought back from a state visit in 1998, serves as a dialogue partner from the archive of the Federal President in this intervention.

The Duo Beham Goldstein will provide musical accompaniment at the kick-off event. Simultaneously with the event series, lectures, readings, exhibitions, and workshops will take place, with the first part taking place in January and February.

Speakers at the kick-off event include Mayor Alexander Putz, Head of the Cultural Department Benedikt Schramm, Daniel J. Schreiber (Director of the Municipal Museums), Richard Hillinger (owner of the Roman Herzog Archive), and Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

The work of the Israeli artist symbolizes the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the hope that they will never be forgotten and that anti-Semitism will be overcome. A model of Fritz Koenig's design is on display in the anniversary exhibition "Lebensstationen" until July 31.

The candelabrum stands as a poignant reminder of the past, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a call to remember and learn from history. The "Herzog & Koenig" event series is a powerful way to honour the victims of the Holocaust and to promote critical memory culture. The event precedes the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism on January 27, a day of reflection and remembrance for all.
