Headline: Stückemarkt Festival 2023: A Celebration of Theatre and Dialogue
The 42nd Stückemarkt Festival is set to be a vibrant event this year, with a focus on exploring diverse perspectives and fostering dialogue. As the guest country, China will be showcasing two successful productions at the festival.
One of the standout performances is "Leaks. Von Mölln bis Hanau", presented by the Schauspiel Frankfurt. This documentary theatre piece delves into the dark and sensitive topics of racist murders, NSU victims, and the right-wing scene in Germany.
In a first for the Stückemarkt, a prize for puppet theatre will be awarded. The Theater and Orchestra Heidelberg, in collaboration with the German Forum for Puppet Theatre and Puppet Art, as well as the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, will be presenting the FIDENA play prize for puppet theatre.
Another intriguing play is "RCE#RemoteCodeExecution", which features five computer nerds trying to restart the world of the not-too-distant future, where all areas of life are digitized and commercialized. The Berliner Ensemble will be performing this thought-provoking piece, directed by Kay Voges.
The Deutsche Theater Berlin will also be participating with Rosa von Praunheim's "Die Insel der Perversen".
The comprehensive cyber-attack on the digital foundations leading to collapse is a central theme in "RCE#RemoteCodeExecution". Numerous plays participating in the competition are political statements, reflecting current societal issues.
The renowned authors' competition is designed as a springboard for new authors, providing an opportunity for fresh voices to be heard. This year, there were 103 entries for the competition, with six making it to the preliminary round for the author's prize.
Interestingly, three translations of Chinese plays were submitted for the international authors' competition. However, no information is currently available on which authors submitted these translations.
Holger Schultze, the Intendant of Heidelberg's Theater, emphasizes that the invited German-language guest performances reflect current public discussion topics. A goal of the festival is to win plays from the guest country for the German theatre scene and open up the market.
In a unique twist, a third piece, which was not allowed to be produced in China, will now be presented in Heidelberg as a staged reading.
The Stückemarkt includes competitions as a core element, providing a platform for new works and fostering creative exchange. Theatre is described as an important venue for negotiating democratic values, making the Stückemarkt Festival a significant event in the German theatre landscape.
