German Forest Fire Unit Contributes to Containing Spanish Wildfires

The German Forest Fire Unit, known as the "Wildfire Module" of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), has returned home after a successful two-week deployment in Spain. The unit, registered as GFFF-V DE1, is a standardized firefighting formation across all member states in the European disaster response procedure.

The NRW Wildfire Unit consists of components of leadership, fire vehicles, logistics, and catering. It comprises six high-terrain-capable tanker fire vehicles and two fire vehicles for disaster protection. The team is made up of firefighters from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen, along with cities from Freiburg, Offenburg, and Villingen-Schwenningen.

Upon arrival in Spain, the unit set up their base in the municipality of Aldeanueva del Camino (Extremadura) and began initial firefighting measures on August 20. They were particularly challenged in the areas of the municipalities of La Bana and San Ciprián, where a large forest fire was spreading in hilly terrain.

Through a combination of ground and air support, further spread of the fire in the Extremadura region was prevented. The unit worked in grueling manual labor and under challenging terrain conditions to detect hotspots, establish control lines, and extinguish fires.

After the fire in Extremadura was largely brought under control, the unit moved to Puebla de Sanabria in the province of Castile and León and continued deployments in the region. Through their efforts, they made a significant contribution to containing forest fires under challenging conditions.

Upon their return to Germany, the deployment forces reported overwhelming gratitude from the Spanish population. Frank Frenser, Media Officer in the local team leadership, has explained that insights from this joint deployment with Spanish forces are now directly incorporated into concepts and structures for wildfire management in Germany.

Logistics always includes an ambulance for medical care of the unit and a workshop vehicle with automotive specialists to immediately repair technical defects. Vehicles and equipment are being cleaned and made ready for deployment again.

The NRW Wildfire Unit is the first German, certified wildfire unit registered with the European Union under the name GFFF-V DE1. It stands for "Ground Forest Firefighting using Vehicles" and represents a reliable capability and an autonomous deployment independent of local supply structures for the requesting states.
