The Constitutional Court of Thailand has ended the premiership of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, marking a significant change in the country's political landscape. The Pheu Thai Party, however, remains confident that it can retain enough partners to hold power in parliament and is planning to negotiate a new government coalition.

The Pheu Thai Party has not yet confirmed Chaikasem Nitisiri as their prime ministerial candidate, but with Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Srettha Thavisin removed by the court, Nitisiri appears to be the leading contender. Nitisiri, a lawyer and former attorney general with a long legal career, served as justice minister under Yingluck Shinawatra in 2013.

Chaikasem Nitisiri is the last of the three candidates Pheu Thai proposed before the 2023 elections. The party is confident it can form a new government, with leaders from United Thai Nation, Democrat, Chartthaipattana, Prachachat, and Chart Pattana parties present in the discussion.

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga from United Thai Nation, Jurin Laksanawisit (Democrat), and Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha are the remaining potential prime ministerial candidates. However, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, though on the United Thai Nation list, is currently a privy councillor and unlikely to return to politics.

The constitution does not specify a time-frame for the lower house to convene and choose a new PM, but it is expected to be within the next week. Meanwhile, the Bhumjaithai Party has accepted a proposal for an interim government from the People's Party, adding to the political uncertainty and potentially gloomy economic outlook due to the change in leadership.

The Pheu Thai Party will soon nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri as their prime ministerial candidate, and the race for the top political position in Thailand continues to unfold.
