Conflict arises between Krach and Wegner within the SPD, as they jumpstart their election campaign efforts prematurely.
Steffen Krach, the newly-nominated SPD top candidate for the 2026 Berlin election, has kicked off his campaign with a critical stance towards the current Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner (CDU). Krach, who served as State Secretary for Science in Berlin from 2014 to 2021, has expressed his views on various issues that he believes Berlin is facing and his plans for the future.
Krach emphasized the need for decisive action and implementation, rather than promising everything to everyone. He believes that Berlin is being governed sluggishly, lacking ambition, and half-heartedly by Wegner. Krach is eager to win the 2026 Berlin election and has no plan B if he doesn't.
One of the key issues that Krach wants to address is the "stress" that has spread in Berlin in recent years due to issues such as high rents, schools and daycare centers, and infrastructure. He believes that Berlin can set a good example in areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, security, cleanliness, and as an "innovation engine."
Krach has also expressed his views on the debate on the peripheral development of the Tempelhofer Field. He stated that developing it will not solve Berlin's housing problems and suggested looking into making the Tempelhofer Field more "liveable" by discussing inclusion, sports facilities, and cultural offerings. Krach is confident that a solution will be found that takes all interests into account regarding the Tempelhofer Field.
Wegner, the current Mayor of Berlin, defended himself against Krach's accusations, stating that he had tackled the issue of administrative reform and that his predecessors had only talked about it. He believes that people can distinguish between someone talking about someone else or talking about themselves and that the Berliners have a good sense for what qualities a candidate brings and what they have achieved.
Krach plans to move to Berlin next year and has stated that he will be in Berlin during the campaign, but will not neglect his duties in Hannover. He is set to be officially elected as the SPD top candidate for the 2026 Berlin election on November 15.
Krach's family is also Berliners at heart, and under his leadership, the SPD aims to tackle these issues and wants more than just ensuring basic functions are working in Berlin. The 2023 coalition of CDU and SPD was elected to work, not to campaign for the 2026 election to the House of Representatives. Krach stated that Berlin's voice is barely heard in national politics and that Wegner often does not take clear positions that are in the interest of Berliners.
