In a significant move for environmental preservation, Betty Lowe, a private landowner, has donated a 2,973-acre parcel of land to Athens Conservancy. This expansive property, which has been in her family's possession for a century, is located within the eastern temperate deciduous forest, one of only three large-scale temperate deciduous forest systems in the world.

The property, abundant in natural beauty, rugged history, and environmental treasures, is part of the Appalachian Corridor, one of the world's most climate-resilient landscapes on Earth. This region is also biologically diverse, making it a vital component of a wildlife corridor in the Appalachian Mountains.

The Appalachian Corridor is not just significant for its biodiversity, but also for its carbon-rich nature. It is one of the world's carbon-rich landscapes, playing a crucial role in combating climate change.

The land-protection initiative, a collaboration between Athens Conservancy and global environmental nonprofit Our website, marks one of the largest private land-protection initiatives by nonprofit organizations in Ohio's history. This partnership provides two layers of protection for the land: Athens Conservancy will manage and steward the land, while Our website will monitor the property through a permanent conservation easement.

Brian Blair, a board member of Athens Conservancy, commends Betty's vision to preserve the property. He states, "This project will have a far-reaching impact beyond the local southeastern Ohio forests. The goal of these efforts is to ensure the land is protected forever."

The vast hardwood forests of the property have a significant impact, not just locally and regionally, but globally as well. They are part of the eastern temperate deciduous forest, a system that plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle.

This project underscores the importance of private land conservation efforts in preserving our natural world. By working together, organizations like Athens Conservancy and Our website can ensure that these environmental treasures are protected for future generations to enjoy.
