Construction begins on forward-thinking, innovative childcare facility in Mississippi Mills
Lanark County's Growing Horizon: The Birth of the Mississippi Mills Childcare Centre
The County of Lanark is experiencing a significant growth spurt, particularly on its eastern side. This growth is set to accelerate with the construction of a new childcare centre in Mississippi Mills, a project that is poised to make a substantial impact on the community.
The new childcare centre, located at 34 Victoria St. in Almonte, will add 78 more childcare spaces, bringing the total to 151 for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. This expansion is expected to be completed by fall 2026, a timeline that aligns with funding requirements.
Warden Toby Randell, on behalf of the County of Lanark, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the project. John Jordan, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, echoed this sentiment, noting that many young individuals will benefit from this development.
The architects of the new centre are the Cuningham Group and Full Circle Indigenous Planning + Design. The building will be constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification, ensuring it is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
The new facility spans 13,000 square feet and will replace the existing centre located at 208 State St. The new building will feature expanded learning areas, bright and open play areas, a nature-based play yard, dedicated spaces for educators and staff, and a warm and inviting layout with generous natural light.
Mayor Christa Lowry extended her gratitude to "most of all, the families of Mississippi Mills - it is your voices that have shaped this vision." The future of the State Street building will be determined by council down the road.
Construction on the new centre has already begun, with ceremonial shovels going in the ground on Thursday, Aug. 14. The event was attended by government officials, project stakeholders, and community leaders, including Parliamentary Secretary Jenna Sudds.
Sudds has seen the impact of Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) investments on families across the country. In February, Mississippi Mills received $704,400 in a CWELCC startup Grant for the expansion of its childcare centre.
Chandos Construction was selected as the general contractor for the project. The groundbreaking ceremony was a family affair, with families associated with the daycare invited to take part. Children even played a crucial role in the festivities.
Minister of Education Paul Calandra has committed to creating 86,000 new, high-quality, affordable childcare spaces, with 231 coming to Lanark County. This development is part of a broader effort to support families and foster growth in communities across the region.
As Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place, and Beckwith continue to expand, a childcare centre like this is not just a necessity, but a beacon of hope for the future. The community looks forward to the opening of the new Mississippi Mills Childcare Centre, a testament to the power of collective effort and the importance of investing in our children's future.
