Construction efforts have commenced on the external structures
The historic Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus is undergoing a significant transformation as its roof and facade are being renovated. The project, which started in early December 2017, is nearing completion, with approximately 5,700 square meters of metal facade currently being installed.
The new facade retains the characteristic and architecturally unique exterior appearance of the Schauspielhaus, but with some modern updates. Gone is the old steel, replaced by sleek aluminum sheets. This change not only gives the building a fresh look but also eliminates the risk of corrosion that was present in the old steel sheets.
The substructure of the facade consists of consoles with supports that hold the metal sheets. The design of these consoles had to be adaptable to accommodate various substrates on the building body, including concrete, brick masonry, foam concrete masonry, and a special formwork stone. The installation of the substructure has started on the building side facing Gustaf-Gruündgens-Platz.
Dealing with significant unevenness in the masonry has been a challenge during the installation of the facade. Preparatory work, including the removal of weather protection and installation of insulation and substructure, is necessary before the facade elements are attached. After around 250 new windows were installed, the new facade is being installed.
The new facade elements are around 30 cm wide and range from 4 to 16 meters in height. The lower weight of aluminum offers a static advantage and facilitates installation. The project manager, Thomas Billen, emphasizes that the consoles of the substructure had to be designed to be applicable to every substrate.
In addition to the new facade, new full-glass entrance systems are being installed in the ground floor, along with the renovation of steel frames and the replacement of old panes. The roof renovation, which is almost completed, is being carried out in parallel with the facade work.
The renovation of the Schauspielhaus is expected to regain its former glory, offering a modern yet timeless exterior that will stand the test of time.
