Construction of a new bridge is currently taking place in Großenhain
In the heart of Saxony, the small town of Großenhain is witnessing a significant change as the construction of a new bridge on federal road 101 commenced recently. This development follows the demolition of the old bridge, which took place in December of last year.
The old bridge, a prestressed concrete structure with Hennigsdorfer steel, had been closed to traffic due to a special inspection revealing its deteriorating condition. The old bridge, similar in design to the partially collapsed Carolabridge in Dresden in September 2024, posed a threat to its stability, according to the Saxon State Administration for Roads and Transport.
The Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development, responsible for road administration and traffic in Saxony, has been overseeing the project. The collaboration for this endeavour involves various entities, including the federal government, the district, the municipality, the railway, the planning office, the demolition company, and the road construction administration.
The new bridge, set to be completed by October 2026, will not only benefit car drivers and public transport but also the regional economy. Unlike its predecessor, the new bridge will include a bike path, making it more accessible for all means of transportation.
The new bridge structure will be approximately 53 meters long and 14 meters wide. Temporary closures of the railway line Dresden-Berlin under the bridge will be necessary during construction. State Secretary Barbara Meyer praised the swift start of construction as a result of an exemplary collaboration between multiple entities.
Since the demolition of the old bridge, traffic has been rerouted. The completion of the new bridge on federal road 101 in Großenhain is a crucial prerequisite for smooth traffic flow. The mayor of Großenhain expressed gratitude to those involved in the project, acknowledging their efforts in ensuring the town's infrastructure remains modern and safe.
