Construction of contemporary construction site for Greifswald is underway on Helmshäger Berg
City of [City Name] Builds New Sustainable Central Workshop
The city of [City Name] has announced the commencement of construction for a new central workshop, located in the industrial and commercial zone "Am Helmshäuser Berg." Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the new workshop spans approximately 20,000 square meters and will replace the existing facilities at Gützkower Straße 70 and Mendelejewweg 17, which are in poor physical condition.
The new workshop will be a state-of-the-art facility, equipped with functional administrative buildings, workshops, a vehicle washing hall, a salt storage hall, garages, carports, and storage areas. The consolidation at the new location will enable more efficient and cost-effective operations in the future and provide an appropriate working environment.
The city council has made a commitment to sustainability with the new construction, which will feature a sustainable energy concept. Heat supply for the new workshop will be provided by a combination of a wood chip plant and a heat pump. The wood chips used in the heat supply are a byproduct of the city's green space maintenance, making efficient use of local natural resources. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the vehicle hall to generate electricity in the future.
In addition, the new central workshop will have a ventilation system with heat recovery and green roofs on buildings and halls to improve working conditions and reduce environmental impact. These features are expected to help the new workshop meet the gold standard of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) according to its criteria, although official certification by the DGNB has been waived by the city council for cost reasons.
Earthworks for the new central workshop commenced under archaeological supervision in July 2025, due to the site's proximity to a historic monument. The start of shell construction is planned for mid-October 2025. The estimated cost of the new construction is around 23 million euros, with the city itself serving as the builder of the new central workshop building.
The consolidation at the new location is expected to bring numerous benefits to the city, including improved working conditions, reduced environmental impact, and more efficient and cost-effective operations in the future. The city of [City Name] continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and modernisation with this exciting new project.
