Construction of the initial segment for the subway tunnel leading to Otopeni Airport in Bucharest has been completed.
The M6 subway line, one of Romania's most significant infrastructure projects, is currently underway. With a total value of RON 7.8 billion (excluding VAT), the line will connect 1 Mai and Otopeni Airport, stretching over 14.2 kilometers and including 12 stations.
The construction project is proceeding with the use of two tunnel boring machines, named "Sfânta Maria" and "Sfânta Ana". Drilling on the first section of the M6 subway line began in April of this year. As of now, TBM "Sfânta Ana" has dug over 406 meters and installed over 265 rings, heading towards Băneasa Airport.
The giant tunnelling machine used for this segment is 97 meters long, weighs approximately 600 tons, and has a cutting head with a diameter of 6.60 meters. The first underground segment completed so far on Line 2 is the first of many, followed by the segment laid out on Line 1.
The works are proceeding according to schedule, and activity is ongoing day and night. So far, TBM "Sfânta Ana" has excavated a portion of the south section of the future subway Line 6, where the six stations and six interstation segments of subway Line 6, south section, 1 Mai - Tokyo, will be built.
The company responsible for the construction of the tunnel boring machines is the Romanian company MBM Service, specialized in tunneling and infrastructure works. The M6 subway line will include the excavation of underground tunnels totalling 6.6 km.
Recently, Romanian Transport Minister Ciprian Șerban visited the construction site and noted the progress of the project. The first tunnel segment between Tokyo and Băneasa Airport subway stations on Line 2 was completed on August 19. The completed segment measures 902.04 meters in length and has 602 tunnel rings installed.
This segment is part of the line connecting central Bucharest to its main airports, Băneasa and Otopeni. The M6 subway line is a crucial addition to Romania's public transportation system, promising to ease the commute for many residents and visitors alike.
