Construction of the WBM building on the wine route in Barnimkiez nearly concludes
The Berlin-Mitte Housing Association (WBM) is constructing a new apartment building in the Barnimkiez neighbourhood of Friedrichshain. The project, which aims to provide urgently needed housing without additional land sealing, is largely complete externally, with work currently focusing on interior fit-out and landscaping.
The building, scheduled for completion in fall 2025, will be five stories tall and will feature a combination of a main house and side wings. The architectural concept for the building was developed by Berlin-based Praeger Richter Architects.
The new building on Weinstraße, adjacent to Volkspark Friedrichshain, will incorporate energy-efficient features such as roof and facade greening, a modern ceiling heating system, and innovative building materials. In addition, a recycling glass wall made from recycled glass fragments will be included in the construction, saving mineral insulation materials and promoting waste reduction.
Part of the facade will be greened, creating additional ecological spaces in Friedrichshain. Extensive roof greening is also planned for the building, contributing to ecological benefits and rainwater retention. The project promotes both climate protection and resource conservation.
Of the 33 apartments to be built on the 1,500 square meter site, previously used as a parking lot, 24 will be subsidized with rents starting at seven euros per square meter. On average, the apartments will be 65 square meters in size and fully barrier-free.
The general contractor of the WBM project in Barnimkiez, Friedrichshain is Zabel Projekt GmbH. The building will be constructed to KfW-55 standards, ensuring high energy efficiency. The project also combines affordable housing, accessibility, and sustainable construction.
As the final construction phases (interior fit-out and completion of green spaces) approach, the community in Friedrichshain looks forward to the arrival of this new addition to the neighbourhood. The apartment building is set to be a significant step towards sustainable urban development in the city.
