Contender Oscar Piastri and fellow racer George Russell narrowly avoid a crash in a boxing ring setting.
In the second practice session at the Zandvoort Grand Prix, there were two near-collisions between George Russell and Oscar Piastri. The first incident occurred on the track, while the second took place in the pit lane, causing a dangerous situation and putting the safety of the pit crews at risk.
During the on-track incident, Russell had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with Piastri. This close call was followed by another incident in the pit lane, resulting from a misunderstanding between Piastri and his pit crew. The stewards investigated the situation and found a clear offense, fining McLaren 5,000 euros for causing an unsafe situation, according to paragraph 12.2.1.h of the FIA's international sporting code.
Despite these incidents, Russell took the close calls lightly, stating they gave him a scare and caught him off guard in the pit lane. On the other hand, Piastri had a challenging first day back in Formula 1, finishing behind his title rival Lando Norris in both practice sessions at Zandvoort. Norris maintained his advantage over Piastri throughout the second practice session, with the competition between the top drivers remaining close.
Interestingly, McLaren has not commented on the second near-collision between Russell and Piastri. However, they acknowledged their mistake in the incident that led to the pit lane fine. Despite the penalties and near misses, McLaren remained the top favorites for the rest of the weekend in Formula 1 at Zandvoort.
The second practice session was also affected by a red flag due to an incident involving another driver. Despite these disruptions, the teams and drivers managed to complete their practice runs, setting the stage for an exciting qualifying session and race weekend at the historic Zandvoort circuit.
