Controversial Debate Society Led by B.J.F to Host Discussion on November 2nd
The Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society, a platform for students to stand up for their principles, express themselves, and have fun, has returned to the College of the Holy Cross after a 20-year hiatus. The society, established in 1846, was revived in 2023 and has since been hosting engaging debates on various topics.
The society's first public session in two decades took place on Dec. 2, with the debate focusing on Clarence Thomas and the state of capitalism. The next debate of the year is scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd, at 4 p.m., in the Levis Browsing Room.
Students interested in participating in the upcoming debate are encouraged to contact the organizers or Kate Santini, the News Editor for the B.J.F. Society, who also co-chairs the society. Interested students can also reach out to Juan Cortes or email the debating society at [email protected].
The debate on November 2nd will tackle three pressing issues: the election, Greek life, and human morality. The event will be judged by Professor Faisal Baluch, Associate Professor of Political Science, and Father Peter Nguyen, S.J., Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Jesuit Priest.
B.J.F. is a welcoming space where all students can debate all sides, regardless of whether they agree or not. The society encourages all skill levels to participate, fostering an environment where knowledge, eloquence, and understanding among students can flourish.
The B.J.F. Society's debates are known for their thought-provoking topics and engaging discussions. In April, the society hosted its last debate of the semester, which focused on the American Dream and civil disobedience. Guest judges for that debate included Fr. Jim Hayes, S.J., and Professor Cynthia.
The B.J.F. Society has come a long way since its revival in 2023. It continues to be a vibrant and active part of the College of the Holy Cross community, providing students with a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful debates and discussions.
So, if you're a student at the College of the Holy Cross looking for a place to stand up for your principles, make your voice heard, express yourself, and have fun, look no further than the Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society. Reach out today and join the debate!
