Controversy erupts surrounding the previous Eintracht-Braunschweig trainer!
Marco Antwerpen, the former coach of Eintracht Braunschweig, has been banned from football for a year following match-fixing allegations. The DFB Sports Court handed down the sentence, also giving Antwerpen's assistant, Frank Döpper, a three-month ban.
The ban comes after Antwerpen guided Eintracht Braunschweig to promotion to the second Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season. The exact time when the ban takes effect is not specified.
The verdict states that both Antwerpen and Döpper attempted to influence the course of a game. The allegations suggest that Antwerpen asked his athletic trainer, Schütte, to persuade Bernd Riesselmann, a player loaned out to BW Lohne from VfL Osnabrück at the time, not to play against VfL Osnabrück in a state cup final.
Riesselmann commented on the incident, saying he was shocked and couldn't believe it. The athletic trainer, Schütte, testified against Antwerpen, stating that he did not want to ask Riesselmann to do so.
Antwerpen's current employment status is not specified in the article. Daniel Meyer was chosen as the new coach of Eintracht Braunschweig after Antwerpen's departure. It's worth noting that this news is not related to the separate incident titled "Nightmare after Cup exit - ACL shock for Eintracht Braunschweig".
Despite the attractive football not always being played under Antwerpen, his promotion of Eintracht Braunschweig to the second Bundesliga is a significant achievement. The match-fixing accusation against Antwerpen was initially unclear, but has since been confirmed. Antwerpen was previously dismissed from VfL Osnabrück at the end of the last season without clear reasons.
