Controversy Surrounding 'Bihar and Bidis': Following an Apology, Congress Plans to Reorganize Kerala Digital Media Unit
In a series of events, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) found itself embroiled in a controversy after a comparative post between Bihar and bidis was made on their official Twitter handle. The post, which has since been deleted, read, "Bidis and Bihar start from B. Cannot be considered a sin anymore."
The controversial tweet drew sharp criticism from several leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar, including Union Minister Giriraj Singh and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav. Giriraj Singh criticized the post, stating that it insulted the Prime Minister's mother and leaders like Stalin, targeted the Hindu religion, and Revanth Reddy joined in the criticism.
JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar stated that the tweet by Kerala Congress has exposed the true face of Congress. He described Bihar as the land of Mahatma Buddha, the land of Goddess Sita, the land of knowledge, the land of Emperor Ashoka, and the land of Sufi saints, implying a stark contrast to the comparison made by the KPCC.
In response, KPCC working president A.P. Anil Kumar stated that the controversial post was not an official response of the party. However, KPCC President Sunny Joseph announced a revamp of the party's digital media cell, indicating a new team would be formed to operate the social media wing.
Following the controversy, A.N. Shamseer, the head of the digital media cell of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, resigned from his post. V.T. Balram, who had taken over as the head of the digital cell after Dr. P. Sarin left the party last year to join the CPI(M) and unsuccessfully contested the Palakkad assembly bypoll, expressed his desire to be relieved of the post due to lack of time.
The KPCC later posted an apology for the controversial tweet. Union Minister Giriraj Singh stated that every single insult will be accounted for and the people of Bihar will give a fitting democratic reply.
As of now, no new information about who will lead the revamped digital media cell has been provided.
