Council candidates for the upcoming session have withdrawn, with notifications set to be distributed by the end of August.
In an exciting development, the city of Greifswald has announced the establishment of a new future council titled "My Greifswald 2030 - What moves me?" The council, funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the federal programme "Democracy lives!", will commence its meetings in the fall of 2025.
The project's aim is to provide a platform for citizens to discuss and derive concrete recommendations on themes that matter to them. The city administration has invited approximately 2,000 Greifswald residents aged 16 and over to express their interest in participating.
Project leader Jonas Dietrich believes that this lottery-based body could serve as a useful supplement to existing participation formats. He hopes for a diverse representation in the council, considering factors like age, gender, and residence in the districts.
From the expressions of interest received, 60 people will be selected by lottery to attend a total of eleven meetings starting in the fall of 2025. The selected participants will have the opportunity to respond to the presented recommendations throughout the process, and their responses will be collected at the end.
The goal is to present the derived recommendations publicly at the end of the process. The council aims to test a lottery-based body as a new procedure for citizen participation, with the hope that it will contribute to shaping the future of Greifswald until 2028.
The establishment of the future council was decided by the Greifswald city council at the end of March 2025. Invitations to express interest will be delivered by the end of August 2025.
It's an exciting time for Greifswald as it embarks on this new journey towards citizen engagement and shaping the city's future. The council's project leader, Jonas Dietrich, looks forward to a productive and diverse dialogue that will help shape Greifswald's future for the better.
