In a significant move towards promoting active travel, Birmingham City Council has awarded a contract to The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) to deliver the next phase of the Big Birmingham Bikes project.

First launched in 2015, the award-winning Big Birmingham Bikes initiative has already distributed over 7,500 bikes across the city, playing a significant role in ensuring access to cycling for Birmingham residents.

The next phase of the project will focus on East Birmingham, providing residents with access to bikes, cycle skills training, maintenance support, and incentives to switch from cars to bikes for short trips. This expansion aims to encourage more people to embrace cycling as a means of transport and take advantage of the new and improved cycle routes in the city.

To make cycling more accessible, TAWS will be working with partners Wheels for All, Sähëlï Hub, Cycling UK, and the British Cycling Federation. Wheels for All, an inclusive cycling provider, will collaborate to create an accessible cycling hub, offering adapted bikes, trikes, and tailored cycling support.

The collaboration doesn't stop there. The Active Wellbeing Society will also work with partners to provide cycle skills training, ensuring that residents have the confidence to use their bikes regularly.

The Big Birmingham Bikes project's expansion comes at an opportune time as the CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, will recognise and celebrate achievements and innovations in active travel on November 25, 2025, at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

With the Big Birmingham Bikes project's expansion and the focus on active travel, Birmingham is set to become a city where cycling is not just a hobby but a viable and preferred mode of transport for many residents.
