In the coastal town of Hove, graffiti was discovered outside the seafront flat of Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Labour Leader. The offensive graffiti, which included the words "Tax evader Rayner" and "Rayner tax avoidance," was daubed on construction chipboard and a white wall close to her property.

The vandalism was met with strong condemnation from various quarters. Angela Rayner's spokesperson called the incident "totally unjustifiable and beyond the pale." The Prime Minister also condemned the vandalism in the strongest possible terms, while the Downing Street spokesman expressed similar sentiments.

Peter Kyle, the MP for Hove and Portslade, expressed his disappointment at the graffiti. He recently assumed the role of Business and Trade Secretary in the Cabinet reshuffle. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's condemnation followed an official probe into which Angela Rayner admitted underpaying stamp duty on the property.

The Brighton and Hove City Council took swift action to remove the graffiti due to security concerns and their policy of removing offensive graffiti. However, initial attempts by workers from the council to clear the graffiti were met with local complaints, leading to a pause in the cleanup.

In response to this, local residents and community groups took it upon themselves to fundraise for the removal of the graffiti. Their efforts were successful, and the offensive markings were eventually removed.

Sussex Police are treating the graffiti as criminal damage and are proactively making enquiries. They have asked anyone with information to call Sussex Police with the reference serial 528 of 04/09. The police have also contacted the homeowner to identify and address any further concerns.

The graffiti also included the phrase "Hove is better than this," suggesting a wider sentiment of disapproval towards the incident. The vandalism is a matter for the police, and further updates on the investigation are expected in due course.
