Countries seek to align with the security association
In a significant development, a coalition of 26 nations, primarily from Europe, alongside Canada and Australia, have pledged to participate in securing a potential ceasefire or peace agreement in Ukraine. The coalition, led by France and the UK, aims to prevent any new major aggression and involve these countries in Ukraine's long-term security.
The discussions about Europe's support and plans for Ukraine were held with US President Donald Trump. While the talks did not involve any new major aggression prevention measures or the production of Ukrainian long-range missiles, the coalition appealed to Trump to provide US guarantees for their plans in Ukraine. However, no information was provided about whether Trump agreed to provide these guarantees.
The German government reportedly participated in the conference, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) emphasizing a significant increase in weapons systems and air defense for Ukraine. Contrary to some reports, the discussion did not involve the deployment of the German military. Instead, the troops, if committed, will be stationed at sea, in the air, or on land to strengthen Ukraine and secure peace after the war.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, announced that these 26 nations are ready to send troops to secure a potential ceasefire or peace agreement in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed satisfaction with the consultations and stated that there is consensus in the coalition of the willing on the general framework of security guarantees.
Zelensky also emphasized the importance of a strong Ukrainian army, stating that it is central to their plans. The coalition shares this sentiment, and the German government has expressed a desire to support Ukraine's offensive capabilities, such as helping with the production of Ukrainian long-range missiles.
Russia, however, has rejected any peace initiative, according to the information provided. The force, if deployed, will not have the intention to wage wars against Russia, but to secure peace and send a strategic signal. The force will be deployed within a ceasefire, not on the frontline, in areas designated by the coalition of the willing.
The participating countries are now preparing the corresponding documents to formalize their commitments. The goal of these discussions and the subsequent actions is to ensure lasting security for Ukraine and to prevent renewed aggression in the region. The US, while expected to play a more limited role mainly in aerial support and surveillance, is an important part of this international coalition.
