County of Kassel's Animal Welfare Expert Offers Heat Safety Advice for Four-Legged Creatures
As the mercury rises, it's crucial to ensure our furry friends and small pets stay safe during the summer months. Here are some essential tips to help you keep your pets comfortable and healthy.
Firstly, it's important to note that car interiors can quickly reach life-threatening temperatures. At 30 degrees Celsius outside, a car's interior can exceed these dangerous levels within half an hour. Therefore, it's advisable never to leave your dog in a car during the summer when the outside temperature is above 20 degrees Celsius.
Dogs, especially those with short snouts like Mops, Bulldogs, or Shih-Tzus, have difficulty coping with high temperatures due to their deformed skull anatomy and shortened airways. Their ability to cool their body through panting decreases at 28 degrees Celsius.
Rodents like rabbits or guinea pigs, which cannot sweat, also have difficulty coping with high temperatures. To provide additional cooling for them, ensure their hutch is not placed in direct sunlight and consider placing cold stones inside.
Gundula Utzinger, head of the animal protection department in the Landkreis Kassel, advises adequate hydration and shaded areas for pets during summer. Shaded areas not only provide cooling but also protection from flies, horseflies, and mosquitoes. For outdoor pets, shaded areas should be located under larger tree groups, or shelters and shade nets that are not directly exposed to sunlight.
As the number of hot days increases, making summer challenging for pets, it's essential to take these precautions to ensure their well-being. Remember, a little care goes a long way in keeping our pets happy and healthy.
