Court head displays sympathy towards climate activists' protests

In a move that has sparked controversy, Tarek Al-Wazir, the transport minister of the German state of Hesse, is pushing forward with the construction of the A49 motorway, despite protests from forest protectors. Al-Wazir, who is also a member of the Green Party, has introduced a 365-euro ticket for seniors as part of his transport policy.

The federal transport minister could potentially enforce the A49 motorway project with the support of the Union, the SPD, and the FDP. However, the Hesse Greens, who have consistently been against the project, have voiced their opposition. For federal motorways, the federal government is responsible, and a state minister cannot stop such a project.

The states where the Greens have government responsibility, such as Baden-Württemberg and Berlin, are implementing climate policy and investing in local roads, buses, and trains. However, they lack the necessary majorities in the Bundestag to stop federal projects like the A49 motorway.

The Fridays for Future movement, a global movement advocating for action on climate change, has expressed criticism towards the Greens in the Bundestag. A protest by Fridays for Future took place, as indicated by a photo via dts News Agency. The parliamentary group leader of the Greens in the Bundestag, Anton Hofreiter, has expressed understanding for the criticism of the movement.

Hofreiter defends the policy of Hesse's transport minister, Al-Wazir, stating that he sees no political tightrope between the federal opposition Greens and the state government Greens. He believes that the Greens, when they have government responsibility, are making significant strides in implementing climate policy and investing in local infrastructure.

Despite the ongoing debate, it seems that the A49 motorway project is set to move forward, with Al-Wazir pushing ahead amidst the protests and political discussions. The future of this project and the role of the Greens in shaping Germany's transport policy will continue to be a topic of interest in the coming months.
