Cows Led to the Valley in 2025: The Current Location of the Livestock Stalls
The Allgäu region is gearing up for the annual Viehscheid, a traditional event marking the end of the Alps season. This year's Viehscheid season kicked off on Tuesday in Kranzegg, Upper Allgäu, with more events planned across various locations until early October.
Cows and sheep are making their way down from the Alps during the Viehscheid, returning to the valley for the winter. The charming town of Oberstaufen is expected to attract around 8,000 guests, but several thousand visitors are expected at each event throughout the region.
The Viehscheid is not just a tourist attraction; it's a deeply rooted cultural tradition in the Allgäu. Festival tents, music groups, and markets are part of the program at these events, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
This year's Alps season, according to the Lindau grazing association, went well with sufficient water, healthy animals, and minimal pest infestation. The association, which has around 180 young cattle at the Hochgrat, is a testament to the successful season.
In addition to the cow herds, sheep are also expected in the valley during the Viehscheid in Kranzegg. Notable Viehscheid events include one in Obermaiselstein on September 20, 2025, and another in Bolsterlang on September 23, 2025.
The dates for Bad Hindelang, Oberstaufen, Schöllang, Balderschwang, and Oberstdorf have been announced as September 11, 12, and 13 respectively. Visitors can look forward to these events, as well as others yet to be announced, to celebrate the end of the Alps season in style.
The Viehscheid events are public events, open to all, providing an opportunity for locals and tourists alike to experience this traditional celebration. So, if you're in the Allgäu region in the coming weeks, be sure to catch a Viehscheid event and witness this unique cultural tradition.
