Crash ruins weekend's bright start: Piastri claims pole position during qualifying session
In the thrilling qualifying session for the Bahrain Grand Prix, George Russell clinched an impressive second place for Mercedes. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, managed fourth, making it a strong showing for the Silver Arrows.
However, the session was disrupted by an incident involving Esteban Ocon, who had a crash in Q2, causing a seven-minute interruption. Thankfully, Ocon confirmed immediately after the crash that he was okay.
The McLaren team has had a stellar performance in this qualifying round, with Lando Norris leading the charge. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, started in third, a position he will be eager to maintain in the race.
Piastri's third place puts him in a strategic position. He trails Norris by 13 points, and a perfect race could see him take the championship lead.
The qualifying session was not without controversy for Mercedes. Russell and his teammate, Antonelli, were penalised a position for leaving the garage during a red-flagged session following Ocon's accident.
Red Bull's driver, Max Verstappen, could only manage seventh in the qualifying round. This puts him behind Norris in the standings, with the McLaren driver leading with a one-point lead over Verstappen heading into Sunday's Grand Prix.
The Mercedes cars made the best impression after McLaren in the qualifying round, suggesting a close race between these two teams.
The Grand Prix is scheduled for 6:00 PM CEST and will be live on ServusTV and Sky. Fans are eagerly awaiting the action-packed race, with Russell and Piastri poised for a thrilling battle.
