Trial for L'Ecume II Tragedy Set to Begin Next Week

Next week, the trial for manslaughter charges in connection with the sinking of the L'Ecume II trawler will commence at the Royal Court in St. Helier, Jersey. The trial, which is scheduled to last four weeks, will begin on 1 September.

The defendants in the case are Lewis Peter Carr (29) and Artur Sevash-Zade (35). They have pleaded not guilty to the unlawful killing of skipper Michael Michieli and crew members Jervis Baligat and Larry Simyunn, who were all aboard the trawler during the tragic incident.

The L'Ecume II was involved in a collision with the Condor's Commodore Goodwill freight ship on 8 December 2022, off Jersey's west coast. A search-and-rescue operation was triggered, but the search proved unsuccessful, and a recovery mission the following week led to the recovery of two bodies from the wreck. The recovered bodies were later identified as crewmen Jervis Baligat and Larry Simyunn, both from the Philippines.

The investigation into the L'Ecume II collision, named Operation Nectar, has involved over 600 lines of inquiry and 2,075 documents, media, exhibits, and property. The operation to raise the L'Ecume II for both "evidential gain and for humanitarian reasons" began two months later, with specialist teams and equipment, including a 60-metre-long crane barge, starting the operation.

The name of the prosecutor in the case against Lewis Peter Carr and Artur Sevash-Zade is Crown Advocate Matthew Maletroit. A total of 138 witnesses provided statements during the investigation.

In a tragic turn of events, the third victim, Mr Michieli, was formally identified on 3 May 2024. The trial will take place at the former government office building in the Parade, the same location where the Royal Court is situated.

Both Carr and Sevash-Zade first faced manslaughter charges in separate hearings at the Magistrate's Court in July 2024. The trial at the Royal Court will provide an opportunity for justice to be served in this tragic case.
