Criticism from Sean Bowen over protocol blunders leading to fellow jockey's injury
In a thrilling day of racing, Goodwin, the 11-10 favourite, emerged victorious in the 2m3f handicap hurdle, which was kindly sponsored by the horse's owners. The win came as a relief for trainer Ben Pauling, who had seen Goodwin struggle in recent races.
The race saw a strong performance from Goodwin, who had Cannock Park behind him in his win at Newbury. Ridden by Freddie Gordon, Goodwin appreciated the drop in grade to score by four and three-quarter lengths.
However, the day was not without its disappointments. In the same race, David Noonan, a friend and colleague of Sean Bowen, suffered a suspected broken leg after a nasty fall. Noonan's mount, Dyadoras Destiny, was made a non-runner. The delay in the second race, which was scheduled to follow the 2m3f maiden hurdle, was cited as a contributing factor to Noonan receiving a kick from a rival at the start.
Sean Bowen expressed his frustration at the processes in place prior to the 2m3f maiden hurdle, stating that mistakes are made by everyone at times but feeling a massive mistake was made today. There was a stewards' inquiry into the opening 2m51⁄2f conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle won by Shantou Lucky, but no new information was provided in this paragraph.
Several jockeys were deemed to have caused a false start in the same race, leading to the starter not being in place at the scheduled off-time. Shantou Lucky, who won the opening race, showed promise as a youngster, winning a bumper at this course and novice hurdles at Plumpton and Newbury.
Unfortunately, the day also saw Lewis Saunders, Harriet Tucker, Freddie Mitchell, Bradley Harris, Callum Pritchard, Jamie Brace, Paddy Hanlon, and Nathan Howie given one-day bans.
As the racing community rallies around David Noonan in his time of need, it serves as a reminder of the inherent risks and uncertainties that come with the sport. Here's to a speedy recovery for Noonan and a continued string of victories for Goodwin and its dedicated team.
