In the city council of Bergisch Gladbach, tensions are running high over a recent decision regarding the Altenberger-Dom-Straße. The CDU faction has voiced its criticism, raising concerns about the legality, sustainability, and impact on residents and retail trade.

The Greens, SPD, and FWG fractions had initially planned to redesign the street, but they have since abandoned these plans due to past mistakes. However, the political majority decided to push through a resolution with an uncertain legal basis, potentially creating new legal and political uncertainties.

The CDU fraction, led by Harald Henkel, deputy chairman and council member for Schildgen, believes this approach is irresponsible, stating that implementing a political agenda with taxpayers' money is not acceptable.

The CDU is committed to sustainable urban development and takes the interests of all citizens into account. They have proposed concrete repair plans for the Altenberger-Dom-Straße, aiming to optimize traffic safety, reduce noise emissions, and improve the quality of stay.

However, the CDU also emphasizes the importance of testing these plans in reality. Simulation does not guarantee functioning traffic, and only real-world trials can show if the plans work under everyday conditions. This approach has been successful in Bergisch Gladbach in the past, but it has also shown that theory and practice can be far apart with catastrophic consequences.

The CDU fraction has applied for a postponement of the agenda item in the responsible committee for mobility and traffic areas. They also propose testing the traffic simulation of the administration in reality on the Altenberger-Dom-Straße.

The decision for the Altenberger-Dom-Straße has been met with criticism from various quarters. A significant number of parking spaces will be lost, and the exit lane towards the Leverkusenstraße will be shortened. The CDU faction believes this decision goes against the interests of residents, retail trade, and sustainability.

The complaint to the supervisory authority was not initiated by the CDU fraction but by a citizen from Bergisch Gladbach. The city administration admitted in the committee meeting that it must await the decision of the supervisory authority.

The CDU fraction sees it as its duty to work not only content-wise but also formally correctly. They criticize a concept that only caters to the political wish image of the Greens and SPD, and they commit themselves to a sustainable urban development that takes into account the interests of all citizens.
