Critics of Trump argue that one specific remark points to Putin influencing him during their Alaska meeting
In a highly anticipated meeting in Alaska, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held discussions that reportedly focused on the Ukraine conflict, common interests in the Arctic, and metals. According to various reports, specific countries from Putin were not explicitly mentioned in relation to the Arctic region and resources. There were speculations about potential deals in the Arctic region and resources, but no clear indications were given regarding the countries involved.
During the meeting, Trump claimed that Putin told him the 2020 election was rigged due to mail-in voting. This assertion has been met with criticism from social media users, who allege that Trump was "manipulated" and 'gaslit' by Putin. CNN senior political commentator Adam Kinzinger stated that Trump was "just so easy to manipulate", while Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief and CEO of Zeteo, expressed that it's "so pathetic how easy it is to own America's president".
Trump's claims about the conversation with Putin about elections echo his previous assertions that the 2020 election was 'stolen' from him, which have been widely debunked. Similarly, Putin was reported to have won more than 87 per cent of the vote in the 2024 Russian election, a result that has been criticised by international observers as the most fraudulent in the country's history.
In August 2020, Trump claimed that the use of mail-in ballots in the election was a Democrat-led attempt to disrupt a "fair and free election." Interestingly, many other countries, including the UK, allow for mail-in ballots.
In a separate claim, Trump asserted in September 2022 that the war in Ukraine would not have happened if he were president. However, the complexities of international politics and the reasons that led to the conflict are far more nuanced than any single individual's decisions.
The meeting between Trump and Putin lasted almost three hours, but they failed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire deal for Ukraine. The implications of this standoff remain to be seen in the context of ongoing global geopolitical tensions.
