Crowds rally against Israel's blockade of Gaza, close to the Venice Film Festival
In the picturesque city of Venice, Italy, a peaceful demonstration took place, with a significant number of left-wing political groups and film professionals rallying for justice in Gaza. The demonstration was sparked by an open letter drafted by a group called Venice4Palestine, which has garnered over 2,000 signatures from film professionals, including directors Guillermo del Toro and Todd Field.
The heart of the issue lies in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, a humanitarian crisis that has claimed the lives of at least 63,025 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. This number is considered reliable by the United Nations. The war in Gaza was ignited by a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians.
Marco Ciotola, a 31-year-old computer scientist from Venice, and Claudia Poggi, a teacher, were among those who held Palestinian flags at the rally. Ciotola stated that the entertainment industry should take a position on Gaza, while Poggi expressed her dismay at the ongoing situation, stating that it is not acceptable.
The Venice4Palestine initiative has been compared to the boycott of artists who performed in South Africa during the apartheid era. Fabiomassimo Lozzi, co-founder and director of Venice4Palestine, defended the proposed boycott, stating that they are amazed at the amount of reaction their initiative has received. Lozzi also mentioned that a similar initiative was organized at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Notably, the collective associated with Venice4Palestine had also requested the festival to disinvite actors Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler due to their past support for the Israeli military. However, the festival has ruled out such a move, stating that the actors are not expected to attend.
Prominent figures such as Spanish Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem have spoken out against Israel's invasion of Gaza, comparing the Israeli Defense Forces to Nazis and condemning the violence as crimes against humanity. The Venice4Palestine initiative aims to bring Gaza and Palestine to the core of the public conversation in Venice, with the objective of amplifying the call for justice and accountability regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The demonstration took place a few kilometres from a festival where George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Emma Stone walked the red carpet, underscoring the contrast between the glamour of Hollywood and the gravity of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Venice4Palestine initiative serves as a reminder that while the world watches the stars, there are still pressing issues that demand our attention and action.
