Cryptocurrency-linked abduction of a Swiss national results in seven arrests by French authorities
In a series of shocking incidents, French authorities have been dealing with a string of kidnappings targeting families of high-worth individuals dealing in cryptocurrencies. The latest victim, David Balland, co-founder of the crypto firm Ledger, valued at over $1 billion, was kidnapped in January.
According to reports by the Dauphine Libere regional daily, Balland was found tied up in a house near the Valence high speed train station. His girlfriend was discovered tied up in the boot of a car outside Paris. Balland was freed the next day, while his girlfriend was rescued during the operation.
In a similar incident in May, a man whose father ran a Malta-based cryptocurrency company was kidnapped by four hooded men in Paris. The man was held captive for 58 hours before being released during a raid by the security forces. His finger was severed, and the kidnappers demanded a hefty ransom.
French authorities have detained seven people in connection with these kidnappings. However, the specifics of the extortion attempts in these incidents have not been disclosed.
In another case, a 20-year-old Swiss man was freed in a special operation by French gendarmes in the southeastern city of Valence. The young man, whose name has not been publicly disclosed, was kidnapped in France. Seven suspects have been arrested in this case, but the source of the information has asked to remain anonymous.
These kidnappings have raised concerns about the safety of individuals in the cryptocurrency world. As the value of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, so too does the attractiveness of these high-worth targets to criminals.
