The Main Customs Office of Brunswick hosted an engaging event on Future Day, April 3, 2025, attracting 28 children aged 10 to 16. The day was filled with interactive activities designed to give these young minds a glimpse into the world of customs work.
At the helm of the event was Bernhard Tiemann, the head of the main customs authority in Braunschweig. Dagmar Taeger, the press spokesperson for the Main Customs Office of Brunswick, expressed her hope for the potential future employment of these children as customs officers.
The day was packed with a variety of role-plays, including a construction site inspection and a court trial, providing the children with a realistic understanding of customs work. The children had the opportunity to search a suspicious vehicle for prohibited items, including weapons, cigarettes, drugs, and other contraband.
In addition to practical exercises, the children also learned about the theoretical aspects of customs work. They were introduced to concepts such as gross, net, minimum wage, smuggling, and tax evasion. An exhibit table showcased corals, giant clams, snake skin, bear and leopard fur to demonstrate the customs' role in protecting animals and plants.
The children also had a chance to test deployment vehicles and equipment, try on handcuffs, radio devices, and protective vests, and even practice unarmed self-defense on punching bags. They were also introduced to tools such as practice irritant sprayers, drug swab tests, laser devices for document control, and endoscopes for cavity inspection.
Dagmar Taeger expressed her satisfaction with the Future Day event, stating that it was a great opportunity for the children to learn about the diverse tasks and work areas in the customs office. The Main Customs Office of Brunswick looks forward to future events that will continue to inspire and educate young minds about the world of customs.
