Customs inspections in Steinfurt county's food establishments reveal widespread usage of unauthorized labor and illegal employment practices

In a shocking revelation, the Main Customs Office Münster has uncovered suspected cases of social security fraud in eleven catering establishments in the Steinfurt district. The inspections, conducted under the Law on Combating Undeclared Work, took place on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

During the inspections, four companies were suspected of undeclared work, with three of these companies found to employ people without a residence permit. An employee without a valid ID was also found, violating the obligation for employees in the catering industry to be able to identify themselves at any time.

Furthermore, four companies had not or only insufficiently reported their employees to social security. As a result, money is missing from the social security funds, and it is believed that this undeclared work has been ongoing for several years.

The customs office has initiated criminal proceedings against five employees and two employers for illegal residence or assistance. Verena John, press spokesperson at the Main Customs Office Münster, expressed surprise at the extent of undeclared work and illegal employment uncovered.

Honest catering businesses are reportedly losing a financial advantage due to undeclared work by the inspected establishments. The customs office will conduct further investigations in the coming weeks, and for further questions, contact Verena John at the Main Customs Office Münster via telephone, email, or website as provided.

It is important to note that there are no specific operators of inspected restaurants in the Steinfurt district explicitly named under suspicion of undeclared work in 2025 based on available public sources.

The inspections involved eleven employees of the Main Customs Office Münster, and the customs office suspects undeclared work in all four cases has been ongoing for several years. At least one employee without a residence permit presented a forged ID document.

Six out of seven inspected catering establishments had partial serious violations. The customs office urges all businesses to comply with the law and encourages anyone with information about undeclared work to come forward.

Further investigations are pending in all four cases of suspected undeclared work. The information provided is from the Main Customs Office Münster, transmitted via news aktuell.
