Customs Office Schweinfurt Announces 1.8 Billion Euros Collected for 2023 Federal Budget

The Schweinfurt Customs Office, located in Lower and Upper Franconia, has reported a significant increase in tax revenue for 2023. With a total of approximately 1.8 billion euros collected, the office has maintained a high revenue level compared to previous years, surpassing the 1.7 billion euros collected in 2021 and the 1.9 billion euros in 2022.

Customs duties and import VAT were the strongest revenue streams for the office, totaling 1.08 billion euros. Excise duties, including energy tax and electricity tax, accounted for 408 million euros, while taxes on alcohol, tobacco, sparkling wine, and coffee brought in around 25 million euros. Motor vehicle tax contributed 280 million euros (268 million euros in 2022), and beer tax amounted to more than 31 million euros.

The Schweinfurt Customs Office plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of imported goods by preventing the entry of inferior pharmaceuticals, unsafe technical products, or counterfeit products into the European Union. In 2022, over 4,200 criminal proceedings and nearly 300 fine proceedings in the field of customs and excise offenses were concluded at the Central Penalty and Fine Office North Bavaria, which handles criminal proceedings and fines for the Main Customs Offices Schweinfurt, Nuremberg, and Regensburg.

The office is also actively combating the shadow economy. In 2023, the Financial Control of Black Work, a unit within the Schweinfurt Customs, was successful in its efforts, with courts imposing custodial sentences totaling approximately 53.5 years. Fines totaling over 53.6 million euros were imposed in the investigations of the Financial Control of Black Work, and the amount of damage caused by black work or illegal employment was 24 million euros in 2023, a decrease from 32.8 million euros in 2022.
