The Regensburg Customs Office has been actively combating the illegal smuggling of tobacco and other contraband, as evidenced by several seizures made in April.

In a series of operations, the Furth im Wald Traffic Control Unit, led by Thomas Schell, uncovered a number of hidden caches containing illicit goods. These technically complex hiding places were found in vehicles, with smuggled cigarettes being a common find.

In one instance, a Bulgarian driver was found with 5,800 cigarettes hidden in his car. After paying a security deposit, the driver was allowed to continue his journey. The cigarettes, primarily from Bulgaria, had an evaded tobacco tax amounting to 14,417.89 euros.

Another operation led to the seizure of 8,000 cigarettes, while a further 6,900 were found in two separate cases. In a more significant find, 66 kilograms of untaxed shisha tobacco were discovered in the cargo hold of a bus two weeks after an initial check.

The Regensburg District Court sentenced a 44-year-old woman from Romania to eight months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, and ordered her to pay the court costs, following the discovery of 800 cigarettes in her possession. A search of her luggage revealed seven more suitcases filled with smuggled cigarettes.

Experience, technology, and trained eyes are key to the success of the Furth im Wald Traffic Control Unit in detecting these hidden caches. It's important to note that cigarette smuggling can occur in vehicle panels, although this fact is not specific to the events in the paragraph.

The Regensburg Customs Office also uncovered additional illegal items such as eight spring knives, three stun guns, CS gas sprays, and small amounts of narcotics. A criminal proceeding was initiated against a bus driver for suspected tax evasion, with an estimated tax loss of 3,806.08 euros.

In total, the Furth im Wald Traffic Control Unit recorded 47 criminal proceedings in April, including cases involving weapons possession and drug offenses. For press inquiries, the Regensburg Customs Office can be contacted via Nadine Striegel at 0941 2086-1503, email: [email protected], or website: www.zoll.de.

The tobacco was loaded in Romania and was supposed to be picked up in Belgium. However, the contact details for the suspect investigated by the Munich Customs Investigation Office for suspected tax evasion involving the transport of unstopped shisha tobacco were not provided in the search results.

The Regensburg Customs Office continues to work diligently to combat illegal activities on the A3 near Straubing-Bogen, with the seizure of 95,460 untaxed cigarettes in April being a testament to their efforts.
