Customs Patrol Seizes Nearly 400 Contraband Cigars
A traveler residing in Switzerland found herself in a sticky situation after a customs check on an ICE train between Basel and Freiburg on August 21. The incident, now being handled by the Main Customs Office Lörrach, led to the discovery of an unclaimed suitcase and shopping bag containing several neutrally packaged packets of cigars.
Upon opening the suitcase and looking into the bag, the officers found several packets, one of which had a name sticker. A subsequent passenger check revealed a match in the passport of a 29-year-old traveler with a residence in Switzerland.
The traveler initially stated that the cigars were gifts for a friend in Freiburg. However, upon further investigation, the customs officers collected import duties of around 5,300 euros and initiated a criminal proceeding against the traveler for suspected tax evasion.
Inside the packets were several cigars of various Cuban brands with a total sales value of over 10,300 euros. The traveler admitted that the suitcase and bag were hers after being asked to leave the train with customs officers.
Despite the seizure, the traveler was allowed to continue her journey with lighter luggage, but must await the outcome of the proceedings. The press spokesperson for the Main Customs Office Lörrach, Antje Bendel, could not provide any further details about the traveler's identity at this time.
