French Cyclist Kévin Vauquelin Undergoes Surgery After Fibula Fracture
Kévin Vauquelin, the popular French cyclist who gained national acclaim during this year's Tour de France, is currently recovering from a fibula fracture sustained after the prestigious race. The injury, which required surgery, has cast doubt over Vauquelin's participation in the Rwanda World Championships later this year.
The fracture occurred after a fall down the stairs with his suitcase, as revealed by Vauquelin himself on Instagram. Despite the initial expectation of being on crutches for two to three weeks, the surgery has changed his prognosis, with the time of his unavailability to be communicated later.
Vauquelin's injury affected his lower leg, specifically a lesion of the tibiofibular interosseous membrane near his ankle. Despite the setback, Vauquelin's team, Arkéa – B&B Hotels, has expressed support, announcing the news via a social media message.
Vauquelin's impressive performance at the Tour de France saw him rise to third overall at one point. He also finished seventh in Paris and secured fifth place in the Caen time trial near his home in Normandy. Prior to the Tour de France, Vauquelin captured the hearts of French fans by fighting to stay in the General Classification (GC).
The 2025 Rwanda World Championships now hang in the balance for Vauquelin. French media suggest that it is unlikely he will recover in time for the event. The future of the Arkéa-B&B Hotels team also remains uncertain, with team manager Emmanuel Hubert currently searching for new sponsors.
Rumours of a potential move to Ineos Grenadiers have circulated, but Vauquelin has yet to confirm his future plans. In a lighter moment, Vauquelin joked about the social media speculation regarding the cause of his injury on Instagram.
