China staged its largest-ever military parade in Beijing, led by President Xi Jinping. The grand event was attended by visiting leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin, North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and others. During the parade, Xi Jinping called for global peace and resistance to hegemonism, emphasising China's commitment to a harmonious world.
Apart from the military display of advanced weaponry, showcasing China's growing military capabilities, the event also served as a platform for diplomatic meetings. President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva of Azerbaijan were in attendance, highlighting the deepening ties between the two nations.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated elsewhere. In Ukraine, authorities issued nationwide alerts and urged residents to seek shelter, as Russian forces launched a fresh air assault on Kyiv, according to Ukraine's military. This development comes at a time when political turmoil in France could have an impact on French markets. French opposition parties have forced a confidence vote on 8 September, which could potentially topple Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's government. If the government falls, it could deepen pressure on President Emmanuel Macron.
Elsewhere, U.S. President Donald Trump will host Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House. The meeting is expected to focus on Ukraine and regional energy security, as well as discussions about arms sales, defence cooperation, and the Three Seas Initiative. The meeting between Trump and Nawrocki also highlights Trump's support for Poland's conservative nationalist leader.
In a separate diplomatic encounter, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan, as well as other leaders including Belarusian President Lukashenko, Kyrgyz President Japarov, Turkish President Erdoğan, Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan, Indian Prime Minister Modi, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, during the WWII anniversary events in Beijing.
The political landscape remains dynamic, with significant events unfolding across the globe. As these events progress, their implications for international relations and global stability will continue to be closely monitored.
